The mountain was dormant for 123 years. Then, on May 18,1980 at 8:32 a.m., Mount St. Helens shocked the earth with a cataclysmic explosion equal to a ten megaton blast of TNT. Two hundred square miles of land was totally devastated in seconds. The ash cloud reached a height of more that 60,000 feet and circled the entire world. From this eruption comes Mount St. Helens glass. The ash is 60% silica, a basic ingredient used in making glass. When heated to 2700 degrees, liquifies and is then ready to be blown, using techniques dating back almost 3,000 years.“Since 1978 Glass Eye Studio has been creating exquisite handmade glass art. Located in Seattle, the American hub of glass blowing, their studio features captivating creations by dedicated artisans.
